Players Earn National Team Call Up

3 Young Players from Newham Youngbloods Lions have earned call-ups to the English National Basketball Team camps taking place this Easter in various locations around the country.

Alex Distras an Under 15 Point Guard for the Youngbloods side has been with the club for the past few years representing the U16 Premier Boys team in the National Final Fours this season whilst also leading the side to the same stage recently this season is a part of the training squad for the Under 15 Boys National Team in Manchester this week.

Sade Orija represents the Under 18 Women’s team at Youngbloods as one of the experienced players who combines her time playing for the club whilst also representing the Barking Abbey UEL side in Basketball England Division One Women’s Division. Orija is a part of the training squad for the Under 17 National Team.

Laja Ogidan an Under 16 Forward for the Youngblood U16 Premier team and a team mate of Distras and a member of the St Bonaventure’s School Basketball team who have amassed 4 Finals appearances in 4 Years winning in 2015 (Year 9 Winner) and 2016 (Year 10 and 11 Winner). Ogidan has also recently led his Under 16 Premier team at Youngbloods along with Distras to the 2017 Basketball England Junior National Final Fours taking place in Manchester at the end of the month. Ogidan is a part of the training squad for the Under 17 National team this week in Manchester.

Head Coach Caroline Charles said “Great to have Laja at the England Camp.  Laja is the silent assassin of the team. Alex Distras is a very wise PG his vision and distribution of the ball is way beyond is young years. Sade Orija will quickly blend into the squad as she has all facets of a good player. She dribbles, she drives inside, shoots, big man moves in the paint!”
